ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Hafkenscheid’s work gives a surreal quality to familiar tourist destinations, an effect of in-camera focus and exposure techniques. In this instance, Hafkenscheid depicts a roller coaster in Santa Monica, California, as if it were an architectural maquette or a delicate, intricate toy. Hafkenscheid simultaneously deflates and underscores the iconic power of monuments, encouraging viewers to consider how these icons shape our sense of identity and place. The images in this body of work are neither realistic nor idealized; instead they depict isolated moments that suggest both the spectacular and the everyday.
