Baier’s sombre, deep black expanse, shorn of landscape details such as a horizon line, lures the viewer into providing her own meaning. Baier’s work presents voids that reflect back onto viewers their own ways of perceiving the world.

Lives and works in Montreal

Nicolas Baier is known for his overt manipulation of a vast and personal collection of images that, though “real,” are transformed into a completely fabricated reality. Baier studied at Concordia University in Montreal and his artwork first gained recognition through his inclusion in the 2000 Montreal Biennial. He has won the Prix Louis-Comtois (2015), the Prix du public Loto-Québec (2014), and the Prix Pierre-Ayot (2000), and his public artwork Network was unveiled at York University in 2017. Baier presented a solo exhibition at Gallery TPW in 2001.
